What the border should accomplish

Start with the line you want the bed to follow. Smooth, generous curves usually make mowing and maintenance easier than repeated tight bends. The edge should contain the chosen surface without becoming the focal point of the yard.

How much should show?

Most of the retaining portion belongs below the finished grade. The visible top and the surface levels on both sides should work together. A tall exposed strip is not a substitute for grading, and burying the top under mulch defeats containment.

Installation details that matter

The trench, anchoring and connections determine whether the line stays tidy. Soil conditions and the selected product affect installation. Keep the route clear of irrigation lines and identify underground utilities before excavation. Connect ends cleanly rather than leaving an open overlap where material escapes.

Compare with aluminum

Poly can suit sweeping informal bed curves and a practical budget. Aluminum gives a thinner, more architectural line when properly installed. Both require anchoring and a planned transition at paths; neither should be selected only from a close-up of an unused piece.

Maintenance and damage

Inspect after edging or mowing work and after soil movement. Repair displaced sections before stone or mulch migrates into the lawn. Avoid exposing the strip to repeated vehicle traffic or treating it as a retaining wall for a substantial grade change.

Plan the estimate

Measure the approximate boundary length and show the ends, corners and existing surfaces in photos. Tell RLC whether the old border needs removal and whether the bed material or shape will change at the same time.

Can this hold a large difference in ground height?

It is a landscape separator, not a structural retaining wall. A meaningful grade difference needs its own solution.
