Landscape Showroom / RLC Selection Guide
Muhly Grass for Tampa Landscapes
Muhlenbergia capillaris
Also called: Pink muhly; hairawn muhly
Muhly grass adds fine green texture for much of the year and a cloud of pink-purple flowers in fall. Its seasonal display is most effective in groups with room for the flower stalks to spread.

Where it fits
Use where late-day light can pass through the flowers or in a sunny bed with a dark backdrop. Repeat a group rather than hiding one plant between large shrubs. Keep the mature spread clear of paths and sprinkler heads.
Sizes and varieties
Pink and white-flowering forms are available. The showroom image may show peak fall bloom; the plant is mostly green at other times. Confirm the flower color and nursery clump size.
Care through the seasons
Water new clumps through establishment, then avoid unnecessary irrigation. A seasonal cutback can remove old growth before new foliage develops. Do not shear it into a rounded hedge throughout the year; that destroys the natural texture and flower display.
Placement mistakes to avoid
Deep shade and cramped placement undermine the effect. Do not promise pink flowers year-round or use the bloom image as its everyday appearance.
Buying size is not finished size
Commonly 1- and 3-gallon clumps. These are nursery formats to ask about, not a live stock list or a guaranteed height. Compare the actual canopy, root ball, cultivar and overall condition. Leave room for the mature plant, even when a new installation initially looks open.
Planning the installation
Measure the usable bed, including space around windows, paths, utilities and irrigation. Show RLC both a wide view and the details of the existing ground. Discuss removals, preparation, access and watering before choosing a quantity. A larger plant may give more presence on day one, but the right location and establishment care still determine the result.
What affects cost?
Relative starting plant tier: $$. A tier compares material categories; it is not an installed price. Nursery size, fullness, quantity, delivery access, removals and irrigation changes can alter the quote. Compare the whole scope, including the selected variety and size.
Common question
When will it turn pink?
The show is seasonal, generally in fall. Weather and plant maturity affect timing, and the fine green foliage remains part of the design outside bloom season.
