Use in repeated groups or a low informal hedge with enough room for its rounded spread. Leave a clear strip between the plant and a walkway so trimming is not required every time the shrub grows. It can support a restrained, tidy planting style.
Sizes and varieties
Schilling’s Dwarf is a male yaupon holly cultivar and does not produce the red berry display associated with female hollies. It is not a boxwood. A young standard yaupon is not an equivalent substitute for this compact form.
Care through the seasons
Light shaping is usually preferable to repeatedly carving a tight sphere. Allow the natural rounded habit to do much of the design work. Monitor establishment moisture and maintain a mulch-free space at the stems.
Placement mistakes to avoid
Do not buy it for berries or assume ‘dwarf’ means it never needs room. Very close planting can turn a simple low hedge into a crowded maintenance problem.
Buying size is not finished size
Commonly 3- and 7-gallon shrubs. These are nursery formats to ask about, not a live stock list or a guaranteed height. Compare the actual canopy, root ball, cultivar and overall condition. Leave room for the mature plant, even when a new installation initially looks open.

Measure the usable bed, including space around windows, paths, utilities and irrigation. Show RLC both a wide view and the details of the existing ground. Discuss removals, preparation, access and watering before choosing a quantity. A larger plant may give more presence on day one, but the right location and establishment care still determine the result.

Common question
Is this the same as dwarf boxwood?
No. It is a yaupon holly cultivar. The small leaves and rounded form can serve a similar design role, but the identity and growth behavior differ.
