Cost isn't everythingRock holds heat and makes trimming cleanup harder. Mulch cools soil and feeds plants.
Best of bothMany Tampa yards use mulch in planted beds and rock in side yards, drip lines and AC pads.

How the comparison works

The calculator adds up everything you would spend on each material over time. Mulch starts with the installation cost, then adds a refresh on the schedule you choose. Rock starts with a higher installation cost, then adds a small yearly upkeep amount for cleanup and weed control, plus a top-up every five years. Both sides increase each year by the price-increase rate you set.

Mulch total = install + (refreshes × refresh price, rising each year) Rock total = install + yearly upkeep + a top-up every 5 years

What the numbers do not show

  • Heat: rock absorbs and radiates heat, which can stress plants in full sun and increase watering.
  • Trimming and leaves: clippings and oak leaves fall between stones and must be picked or blown out.
  • Soil health: mulch adds organic matter as it breaks down; rock does not.
  • Flexibility: changing plants in a rock bed means pulling stone and cutting fabric.

Frequently asked questions

When does rock become cheaper than mulch?

It depends on your prices and how often you refresh mulch. With typical Tampa Bay pricing and a yearly mulch refresh, rock often breaks even somewhere between year 4 and year 7.

What should the rock price include?

Excavation or leveling, weed barrier fabric, the stone at your chosen depth and disposal of old material. Edging is sometimes listed separately.

How often should mulch be refreshed in Florida?

Most beds need a 1–2 inch top-up about once a year. Beds in full sun, heavy rain paths or high-visibility areas may be refreshed every 6 months.

Is rock always the better investment?

No. Rock costs less over time in many cases, but it holds heat, makes trimming and leaf cleanup harder and does nothing for soil. Mulch is often the better choice for planted beds and areas under trees.
